Communication skills of front-line leaders, or supervisors are critical in occupational safety and health. There has not been a lot of focus on this aspect because front line leaders are typically stronger with actions than words. One of the areas for improvement is the ability to give clear instructions.
OSH Management
Mico-businesses might have advantages in OSH Management
I was analysing some accident data and my analysis seems to suggest that micro-businesses (less than 25 employees) might actually have better OSH performance (as represented in lagging indicators) than small and medium enterprises (25-200 employees). This may be due to the fact that top management of micro-businesses are usually directly involved in the operations and they can oversee matters directly. In addition such businesses are usually comparatively more manageable. Was told that there had been similar findings in earlier researches too.
Relationship between safety management and safety culture
Is the effectiveness of safety management and maturity of safety culture related? I believe so. My argument is that the safety management system (SMS) of an organisation is the lever to its safety culture and at the same time the safety culture affects the effectiveness of the SMS.
Fatigue management
Fatigue is a common problem in industries like construction, ship building and repair, commercial driving and manufacturing plant. One of the key challenges in fatigue management is that employees affected by fatigue are usually unable to judge their degree of fatigue accurately. This implies that employers need to look at the issue carefully and develop fatigue management plan and operating procedures.
